Everything started off so well. You were doing your exercises and performing your efficiently planned workouts just fine, losing weight and gaining muscle steadily and happily for weeks. And then…all of a sudden, it all stopped, freezing your muscles and, of course, your hopes as well. You can not do any more reps or go any further. Your same regular, daily routine is unable to get you brilliant improvements anymore. In fact, you are losing hard-earned work by gaining weight or losing muscle. Well, what has actually happened?
You may have entered a fitness plateau!
Reason 1 When you first change the way you have been eating by reducing your calorie intake slightly and starting to exercise, you burn more calories than your body takes in, which results in the initial weight loss. However, once your body is smaller, you still continue to burn the same amount of calories that you are taking in and, therefore, do not lose any extra fat and do not gain any more muscle either. In fact, you just “maintain”. The monotony of doing the same lifts and activities is one of the ways you can fall into the trap of just “maintaining”.
Reason 2 Another major reason for reaching a fitness plateau is non-compliance with your overall fitness regimen. As you gradually become discouraged with the apparent outcomes and disappointed with the hectic training schedule for pursuing a higher level of fitness, you slowly stop complying with the workouts and following the diet and, thus, reach the plateau.
All in all, the objective of living a healthier, happier and smarter life is incomplete if you do not get out of the fitness plateau. Some might believe this is the toughest part but, to tell you the truth, it actually gets easier with time.
The good news is that it is perfectly normal for a fitness seeker to reach a plateau.
