Shoes with proper support are crucial to leg protection when you exercise just like mats should be.We often overlook the importance of our exercise mats because we assume it's just to lay on. The truth is they provide as vital function as our cross trainers do. Mats support our lumbar regions when we are laying down and the cushion our joints when we are performing explosive exercise movements.
Don’t just consider the basic thickness and density; consider how it responds to the pressure points of your body during the most rigorous portion of your routine. Too hard or too soft are not good. Think of Golidlocks and the bears, you need it "just right."

Most people prefer the roll up mats over the fold up mats for a couple of reasons. Firstly, a mat that rolls up and is held with an elastic band is easier to carry wherever you are using your mat. Secondly, the roll up mats tend to be less expensive than the fold up counterparts. Good quality roll up mats are available under $50 where you would be hard pressed to find that in the accordion style. If however you are serious about the workouts and your joints, you may want to consider a heavier and more expensive mat. The fold out mats tend to be sturdier and last longer. It all comes down to your specific needs and likes.
